At Academic Licenses we specialize in volume academic software--discount software for schools and libraries. Just five software licenses is usually all it takes to qualify, and the academic license discount prices are much better than educational software box prices, even though these are discounted for education. The truth is, higher-volume academic software orders often merit even lower discount prices.

We also offer special academic pricing for individual students and educators - official proof of student or educator status is required.

Merriam-Webster's Visual Dictionary is an unbelievable visual resource, including more than 20,000 definitions and beautiful illustrations.  Not only does this software offer detailed graphics for simple object-identification, but it elaborates into interpretation: the function, purpose, and significance of terms.  Featuring 6,000 illustrations, all sophisticated, high-quality graphics, Visual Dictionary software is quick to load and very simple to navigate!  It allows users to browse the listings, conduct searches of listings, or find listings through hierarchical categories, beginning with seventeen main categories like "Arts and Architecture", "Sports and Games", "Food and Kitchen", and "Transport and Machinery".

The Visual Dictionary is a versatile tool, and can be used in traditional classroom settings or translation exercises, by teachers or the students themselves, and by people of all skill levels.  Published by Innovative Knowledge, its entries are up-to-date, and illustrations are realistic, and diagrams help make concepts clearer for quicker learning.  Students can take advantage of five learning exercises, including "Scrambled Words" and "Type What You Hear"; in addition, there is always an Index feature handy for locating listings.  Fully equipped with thousands of real human-voice pronunciations and textual definitions—along with the visual representations, of course—the Visual Dictionary is educational for students, a delight to look at, and fascinating even for adults.

Microsoft Office Pro Plus 2007

May 23, 2007 -- Jane DuBois McCarthy

As far as academic software licenses go, for the new Microsoft Office products, Office Pro Plus 2007 is the best deal for education. It includes everything that is in Office Enterprise except OneNote and Groove. So... if you don't need OneNote and Groove, you can save yourself the almost $20 (per academic software license) extra it costs to purchase Office Enterprise.

As far as the product itself goes -- we have mostly heard only good reviews. The one bad review was from a single user with not the strongest computer skills in the world and certainly not the most patience for learning new products. Otherwise, most folks seem to be trying to upgrade now to be ready for the 2007-2008 school year.

Please check out our Academic Software Promotions page if you are interested in a great deal on Office Pro Plus 2007.  Learn more about Microsoft Office Pro Plus 2007 here.

Educational Software Review: Groovy Jungle

May 4, 2007 -- Valerie Bruchon

Groovy Jungle by Sibelius is the premier choice for teaching basic music skills to students ages 7-9.

A truly creative educational software program, Groovy Jungle is loaded with sophisticated graphics that will capture the attention of even the most uninterested kid.  Beginning with the very fundamentals of music, Groovy Jungle's tutorials are visually simple, but fun enough to keep students' interest.  For example, young users will first learn concepts like "loud" and "soft", and as lessons advance and users grasp those basic ideas, they will learn that "loud" and "soft" concepts are called dynamics, and will later learn some of the details of the Italian terminology.  Teachers will find that the lessons are well-paced in their degrees of difficulty, and with twelve customizable multi-part lessons, it is easy to match a student's level of expertise with the appropriate lesson.

Students are exposed to a wide variety of virtual instruments, from all of the traditional Western instruments to the more exotic music-makers.  Emphasis is first placed on the fundamental instruments they are most likely to encounter (piano, a basic woodwind, a basic percussion, a basic string, a basic brass, etc.), and eventually branches out into the more unusual options.  With these instruments painting visual and aural examples, children go on to learn rhythm, dynamics, tempo, arpeggios, the concept of a bass line, meter, melody, etc.  Groovy Jungle offers two basic learning methods, "Create" and "Explore"; at any point during the "Create" option, though fun shapes and jungle themes are used, the more-advanced students can view the actual notation of their own creations (a very useful educational tool!).  During the "Explore" lessons, users are surprised by exciting "bonuses", exotic animals with their own jungle sounds, acting as an incentive to learn, both fun and educational.  Also during the "Explore" option, students get to create their own theme music for their character as they trek through an exotic jungle full of colorful animals, wild vegetation, and bright butterflies.  Any kid will love that!

Groovy Jungle is an excellent example of educational software, as it seamlessly integrates music education tools with jungle fun, in an effective and imaginative way!  Read more about Groovy Jungle here.

Academic Software

updated April 25, 2007 -- Jane DuBois McCarthy

I get questions about this a lot, so I thought I would address it.

Academic Software is the same software as the products you see in stores--it just has a sticker that says "educational software" or "educational use only" or "academic use only" or "for educational use only"--you get the picture. Adobe CS3 Design Premium is the exact same product for education as it is for business. There is no limited version created for academic purposes.

Another thing about academic software, specifically academic software licenses: not all products are offered by publishers for academic markets. Often, if a product is available in a suite or bundle then only the suite or bundle will have an academic software SKU--not the single product.

Then, the next trick to academic software is that to sell it (and I am talking about legally selling current versions), you have to be an authorized academic reseller (which is what we are), and to buy it, you have to be able to eligible to purchase academic software.  Eligibility requirements depend on the publisher. For example: Microsoft offers academic pricing to public libraries; Adobe does not.

I hope this has helped clear up some of the confusion. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
